DR. JACKSON
Mitchell A. Jackson, M.D., is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in refractive surgery. He received his medical degree from Chicago Medical School, completed his internship at Columbus Hospital and his ophthalmology residency at University of Chicago Hospitals. Currently, Dr. Jackson is a clinical assistant professor at the University of Chicago Hospitals and is on staff at many area hospitals.
Dr. Jackson has extensive experience in laser vision correction, performing surgery since its FDA approval for use in 1995. He is involved in the use of a new form of treatment for Keratoconus with the use of Intacs®; Dr. Jackson's practice was recently selected as one of the FDA phase 3 study sites for the PresView™ surgical reduction of presbyopia.

- Assisted in the design and was the first U.S. surgeon to use the Moria microkeratome system currently used in the LASIK procedure

Confident in laser vision correction, Dr. Jackson experienced the LASIK procedure as a patient in May 2000 and is able to explain the procedure from a patient's perspective.

I was tired of the discomfort of contact lenses, but before finding Dr. Jackson and his team I was unsure about undergoing elective surgery on my eyes. However, Dr. Jackson's track record and experience put me at ease about the procedure. The friendly staff at the office has been great. They answered all my questions and told me exactly what to expect during and after surgery. Because of thin corneas, I had to undergo LASEK, which involves a slight longer recovery time than the standard LASIK procedure, so I followed Dr. Jackson's advice to treat one eye at a time. The procedures were quick and about a week after treatment my vision was close to 20/20 and has continued to improve to about 20/15. Having been highly myopic for 30 years it is amazing to wake up each morning being able to see right away.

As a 39 year-old guy who had worn contacts for over twenty years, I was really excited to finally be having the LASIK procedure performed. When I arrived and experienced the most thorough eye exam of my life on the most impressive, state-of-the-art equipment I have ever seen, I grew even more confident in my decision to have it done.

It was very frustrating waking up every morning and not being able to see the alarm clock, the TV, or what the weather was like outside without having to put on my eyeglasses. Although the goal of LASIK is to improve vision to the point of wearing thinner (weaker) glasses, this result is not guaranteed. Additional procedures, spectacles, or contact lenses may be required to achieve adequate vision. LASIK does not correct the condition known as presbyopia (aging of the eye) which most people begin to experience at around age 40 and may require them to wear reading glasses for close-up work. If you presently need reading glasses, you will likely still need reading glasses after this treatment. If you do not need reading glasses, you may need them at a later age. LASIK surgery will not prevent you from developing natural occurring eye problems such as glaucoma, cataracts, retinal degeneration or detachment. Like any other surgical procedure, LASIK presents a risk of complications and side-effects that Dr. Jackson and his staff will discuss with you before undergoing the procedure. Some patients with high myopia, high hyperopia, or other conditions may not qualify for LASIK.
